Dr Toby Cosgrove is a cardiac surgeon who went on to lead the Cleveland Clinic as CEO for 14 years. In this episode of Tech Tonics, hosted by David Shaywitz and Lisa Suennen, he talks about growing up with undiagnosed dyslexia and the path that led him into surgery.
He describes a difficult time at university, where he struggled to keep up with the reading and assumed he simply wasn't clever enough. He was accepted by only one of the 13 medical schools he applied to. During his cardiac surgery training at Massachusetts General Hospital he was told he was the least talented member of his residency group and advised not to pursue the specialty. He went on to become known for creative solutions in valve surgery.
The conversation also covers why he chose failure as the theme of a convocation address at his old university, and his later work on measurement, empathy and digital health. David Shaywitz is the son of Sally Shaywitz, author of Overcoming Dyslexia.
